Relational-Systemic Psychotherapy

Programme

  • Credits: 60 ECTS (30 ECTS/per year).
  • Type of programme: Taught course (some on-line seminars).
  • Calendar: From September to June (2 academic years).
  • Course venue: University of Deusto in Bilbao.
  • Faculty: Faculty of Psychology and Education.
  • Timetable: One day a week from 16:00 to 20:00 (seminars) and two Fridays a month from 9.30 to 13.30 and from 15.00 to 19.00 (workshops and lectures). And, on occasion, Saturdays.
  • Language of instruction: Spanish.
  • Number of places: 25
  • Qualifications: Master’s degree in Relational-Systemic Psychotherapy (official Spanish diploma).

Internships

Internships are a key part of the training on the programme and accounts for 24 ETCS credits.


Where are the internships undertaken?

The Master’s internships are undertaken:

  1. At Centro de Orientación y Terapia Familiar Lagungo.
  2. At DeustoPsych under individual or group clinical supervision.

Individual, marriage or family problems will be handled from a systemic or relational dynamic approach, etc.at both centres.

All the clinical supervisors are family therapists who have proven experience with children, families, couples, bereavement and other types of relational problems.


Structure

The internships in the Master’s degree in Relational-Systemic Psychotherapy consist of 3 different stages with various activities. These are described below:

Stage 0: Pre-practicum: the main objective of this stage is to teach students to apply their knowledge and problem-solving skills in therapy scenarios by using psychotherapeutic techniques, interpersonal communication and emotion management. This seminar will be led by therapists who will assist the students during the other stages of the internship.

Stage 1: Co-therapy with a psychotherapist: this stage carries 12 ECTS internship credits, with a relational-systemic approach to intervention. Students go into the psychotherapy sessions as co-therapists. A family therapist, who is in charge of the case, will constantly be present. Students will also directly observe their classmates’ psychotherapy sessions (behind a one way mirror or via video-streaming).

Stage 2: Co-therapy under a psychotherapist's direct supervision: this stage carries 12 ECTS internship credits, with a relational-systemic approach to intervention. However, during this phase, two students conduct the psychotherapy sessions. One of them is in charge of the case. Meanwhile, the family therapist observes the session, intervenes when necessary and supervises that it is going smoothly. Furthermore, students continue with direct observation of their classmates’ psychotherapy sessions (behind the one way mirror or via video-streaming), with the family therapist, who will guide their learning of competences through this activity.The hours are added up on a weekly basis, taking exclusively the direct clinical practice into account. In other words, intervention, observation and supervision with a therapist.
