The Master's degree in Relational-Systemic Psychotherapy (official Spanish diploma) has been designed for candidates who wish to obtain the necessary competences to practise in the field of Marriage and Family Psychotherapy, in particular, for graduates of Bachelor's degrees, licenciaturas and professionals from the field of Psychology and Psychiatry.

Students or professionals from other health sciences fields (nursing, medicine, speech therapy , occupational therapy, physiotherapy, etc.) or social sciences (social education, social work, etc.) may exceptionally be admitted to the programme. They are required to provide proof of their previous relevant work experience or postgraduate training that ensures knowledge of the following areas: Psychological assessment, Personality Psychology and psychological/psychotherapeutic intervention. No preparatory courses to fulfil these requirements will be offered.

Graduate profile

The graduate profile of this Master’s degree is that of a professional that should have the following characteristics:

  • Be able to solve problems and make decisions within the psychotherapeutic process, interact positively with patients, supervisors and colleagues, develop new and innovative methodologies and address issues taking into account the relationships between all relevant elements.
  • Be capable of applying psychotherapeutic skills (both professional and ethical) from various systemic and dynamic perspectives and in different contexts.
  • Be capable of performing the following functions with utmost professional integrity: 

- Assess, diagnose, plan and implement -oriented psychotherapeutic interventions.

- Write reports adequately.

- Effectively communicate results to recipients.

- Critically assess results and reflect on them or, if appropriate, adapt or change clinical practice in the light of those results.

As mentioned in the Admission Profile section above, the admission requirements for entry to the Master’s in Relational-Systemic Psychotherapy are as follow:

1. Candidates are required to hold an official Spanish university degree or one issued by a higher education institute in a foreign country that enables access to Master’s degree studies in the issuing country.

2. Hold a Licenciatura or BA degree in Psychology or Psychiatry. Admission is also open to graduates in other health sciences (nursing, medicine, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, etc.) or social sciences (social education, social work, etc.) who can demonstrate previous relevant professional experience or postgraduate studies that involve expertise in the following fields: Psychological assessment, Personality Psychology and psychological/psychotherapeutic intervention.

Apart from the access requirements set down in current legislation, a positive assessment is required to enter the Master´s degree programme. This assessment will take into account the following: 

  • Academic transcript (40% weight on assessment).
  • Motivation to do this programme. (25% weight on assessment).
  • Teamwork capacity (5% weight on assessment).
  • Previous professional experience in this field, other postgraduate or continuing education study field related to the master’s (20% weight on assessment).
  • Knowledge of other languages (10% weight on assessment).
